The Skeeter Beaters Foundation is currently raising funds for vector
survey equipment and bed nets for shipment, distribution, and study in
Peru in October-November 2011. Study and distribution will be
accomplished with the Amazon Focus group.
Here are a few of the unique techniques to be used in the Skeeter
Beaters Foundation, Inc. Amazon 2011 project.
1.) Cost - low cost compared to blanket net distribution with no focus
on where, and what type of mosquitoes are breeding in the area. By
locating and mapping the vector, a more focused larvae control program
can be implemented as well as a more targeted net distribution.
2.) No impact to environment - by using oil from available coconuts, the
success of the larvae control program is not conditional on the
availability of pesticides or attendant cost or environmental and human
impact factors.
3. Vector survey equipment can be hand carried in personal luggage by
Amazon Focus personnel reducing cost and increasing efficiency and
safety of shipping.
4.) Backpack Sprayers can be purchased from Ace Hardware and picked up
at local store in Lima, Peru further reducing logistics headaches and
costs.
5.) The concept of larvae control with survey and spraying equipment is
being implemented by US Navy entomology team participating in Pacific
Partnership 2011 this spring and summer and results in the Pacific will
aid Amazon project.
